Dollar Bill wrote a couple weeks ago for Pressbox Online about legislation introduced to allow streamlined introduction of sports betting in Maryland.
Two huge caveats here:
- Federal law would need to change first. The Professional and Amateurs Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) effectively stops states outside those with existing sports betting schemes to offer new ones.
- Introducing a new form of wagering in Maryland like this would still require a public referendum
Nevertheless, it is nice to see that lawmakers are already thinking about this, and may be on fast track to sports betting if the PASPA picture changes.
Maryland lawmakers took the first step toward legalized sports gambling Feb. 8, as the state looks to capitalize upon the lucrative online market.
